Your care

Consultation, surgery and recovery on one block

Neck and shoulder pain, grooves from bra straps and rashes under the breasts are the most common reasons Hudson County patients come in to talk about breast reduction. The operation makes the breasts smaller and lighter and lifts them at the same time.

For patients in Jersey City, the whole course of care stays close to home. You meet Dr. Ovadia at 377 Jersey Avenue, most operations are across the street at Jersey City Medical Center, and your follow-up visits are back in the same office.

Consultation

Dr. Ovadia examines you, goes over your symptoms and the size you would like to be, and explains which approach fits you. Photographs and measurements are taken, and you have time to ask everything you want to ask.

Surgery

Surgery is done under general anesthesia, most often across the street at Jersey City Medical Center. Patients often stay overnight, though some go home the same day. While you are in the hospital, the nurses care for your drains and teach you how to empty them.

Follow-up

Follow-up visits are at the Jersey City office. Drains, when used, are removed there. You wear a surgical bra, whose compression helps prevent and minimize swelling; some swelling is normal and expected.

This is a general guide. Everyone heals differently, and Dr. Ovadia reviews your timeline with you during recovery. Full instructions: recovering after breast reduction.

Recovering at home

For most patients in Jersey City, Hoboken, Bayonne and Union City, the ride home from Jersey City Medical Center is a short one. Plan for someone to drive you home and, ideally, to help you the first day or two.

Your first follow-up visits, including drain removal when drains were used, are in the office across the street from where you had surgery, with parking in the same lot. No part of your care requires crossing the river.

Your recovery, week by week

Insurance

Breast reduction and New Jersey insurance plans

Most patients at the Jersey City office have New Jersey plans. Because breast reduction treats physical symptoms, many plans cover it when their medical criteria are met and it is a covered benefit. Those criteria usually look at how long you have had symptoms such as neck and back pain or rashes, what you have already tried, and how much tissue will be removed.

If you have questions regarding possible insurance coverage for surgery, call or email us and we will go over it with you.

Questions

Breast reduction questions from Jersey City patients

Where is breast reduction surgery done for Jersey City patients?

Most of Dr. Ovadia's operations are at Jersey City Medical Center, directly across the street from the office at 377 Jersey Avenue. Consultations and follow-up visits are in the office, so the place you meet Dr. Ovadia, the place you have surgery and the place you come back to afterward are a short walk apart. He also operates at other hospitals in northern New Jersey and in Manhattan, and the hospital is chosen with you.

Can whoever brings me park at the hospital?

Yes. The office building and Jersey City Medical Center share a parking lot, so the person who brings you can park in the same place on the day of surgery and again for your follow-up visits.

Will I stay overnight at Jersey City Medical Center?

Often, yes, though some patients go home the same day. During the stay the nurses look after your drains and show you how to empty them before you leave.

Do New Jersey insurance plans cover breast reduction?

Many do, when the plan's medical criteria are met and breast reduction is a covered benefit. If you have questions regarding possible insurance coverage for surgery, call or email us and we will go over it with you.

What does a breast reduction cost in Jersey City?

Call (212) 222-4628 to inquire. With insurance, your share depends on your plan. Without it, the fee depends on the surgery, the hospital and anesthesia, and it is reviewed with you before you decide.

Will I lose feeling in my nipples?

Permanent loss of nipple sensation is uncommon. Early after surgery there can be changes in sensation, and they typically return to baseline over time.

I live in Hoboken, Bayonne or Union City. Is this office convenient?

Yes. The Hudson-Bergen Light Rail stops at Jersey Avenue, about five minutes on foot, on the routes from Hoboken, Weehawken, Union City, North Bergen and Bayonne, and there is ample parking for patients who drive.

Can I have my consultation in Manhattan and surgery in Jersey City?

Yes. The practice also has an office at 225 Broadway in Lower Manhattan and one in Millburn, NJ, and phone and video consultations are available. Visits can be at whichever office suits you.
