Fat Grafting in Breast Reconstruction

Dr. Steven Ovadia·October 25, 2026

October is Breast Cancer Awareness Month. In this short video, Dr. Ovadia explains one of the tools he uses to refine a breast reconstruction: fat grafting. Your own fat, moved where you need it.

What fat grafting does

Fat grafting moves your own fat, usually from your belly or thighs, into the reconstructed breast. It is used to:

  • Fill in dents
  • Soften edges
  • Add a layer of your own tissue over the implant

The more of your own tissue covering the implant, the more natural it looks. Fat grafting can also help soften skin that has been through radiation.

How it works

  1. Harvest: gentle liposuction, often from the belly or thighs.
  2. Prepare: the fat is cleaned and concentrated.
  3. Place: the fat is injected in tiny amounts, layer by layer.
  4. Repeat if needed: some of the fat doesn't survive, so it can take more than one session.

Is it right for you?

Whether fat grafting makes sense for you depends on your reconstruction, how much fat you have to spare, and your goals. Dr. Ovadia goes over it with you at your consultation.
